VOX POPULI: Remembering the Tsunami Sanriku of June 15, 1896

The Meiji Sanriku tsunami, which struck 126 years ago, killed up to 20 thousand people.

In March 2011, a deadly tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake tore half the plaque from the memorial, reducing its written message to just a jumble of disjointed words.

Repairs to the monument were recently completed, and I visited the city to see it.

It was named “Kaishu Sunan Kenin no Hai” (Tsunami memorial), and its height is 2 meters.

“The tsunami tore the (original) painting,” said Arata Tezuka, 49, an official with Kamaishi’s cultural promotion department.

Tezuka explained that the damaged parts were left intentionally because they were to highlight the destructive power of the tsunami.

The remainder of the painting was consolidated at the National Museum of Ethnology in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, and is included in the new memorial, along with a contemporary Japanese translation of the entire original text.

“The raging waves continued to rush in, one after the other, killing 800 and leaving only 20,” says one of the clips.

When Tezuka and his team searched the city’s stone graves, they discovered more than 30 memorials to victims of “violent death” and “drowning” in the Meiji era (1868-1912) tsunami.

Most of the monuments were concentrated in the areas that suffered the worst damage and many had the highest water levels in the tsunami.

Author Akira Yoshimura (1927-2006) based his work “Sanriku Kaigan O-Tsunami” (The Great Tsunami of the Sanriku Coast) on interviews with survivors.

I read it when I was a student and was very worried about the danger of disaster.

Shortly before the tsunami, according to Yoshimura, the coast of Sanriku was teeming with record numbers of fish. On the night of the tsunami, a huge roar was heard from the sea, which some believed came from a Russian warship, as Japan’s relations with Russia were tense at that time.

A new stone slab, erected near the Meiji Tsunami Monument, is inscribed with the words of the residents who survived the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

“The earth shook with a violent tremor,” recalls a sixth-year elementary school student. “A few minutes later, our town was swallowed up by black water. The gym I was in at the time no longer exists.”

The memories of the child renewed my determination to ensure that these accounts would be repeated for generations to come.
