Google is working with West Coast earthquake alerts for Android

EEWs can quickly detect tremors and provide warning before vibration arrives. ShakeAlert is the system funded by the US Geological Survey and other partners of the West Coast. Google now appears to be building seismic alerts from this system to Android as part of Play services.

Google is integrating seismic information back to at least January, with 20.26.12 of Play services released this week with better detailing of notifications. First, these alerts are triggered and detected by the ShakeAlert sensor system.

Android uses your approximate location to send information about nearby earthquakes. Earthquakes were detected by ShakeAlert.

Currently, Los Angeles offers ShakeAlertLA app that delivers alerts, while UC Berkeley has MyShake for the rest of California.

In Google’s integration of this functionality directly into Android via Play services, users don’t have to download a separate app they may not be familiar with. With a population of California (2019) of 39.5 million people, the statewide app contains only 500,000 installations on the Play Store. More than 100,000 Los Angeles customer installations dwindle compared to the ten million people in the district.

Depending on how close you are to an earthquake, there are two types of alerts. The first is more urgent and asks users to “expect vibration” with the details:

It is not clear whether these alerts will be enabled by default, or if users should enable them. “Keep in mind” message during a process presented warns you how to:

As part of this experiment, Google will provide a number of general advice, and possibly a map when clicking on the notification:

Identify risks and secure transported items Create a disaster response plan and determine how to communicate in an emergency You may receive an alert in the event of an earthquake

This functionality has been chosen with the latest Play services. However, it is not clear when or whether Android earthquake alerts will be launched.
