Afghanistan earthquake: people seek help from international community amid devastation and lack of aid | world News

Every house in a village of about two dozen has been reduced to rubble by the earthquake that struck Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Hundreds of Miradine residents of Ji’an district are sleeping in the nearby forests and have yet to receive aid that is slowly making its way to the quake-hit areas on Saturday.

According to state media, at least 1,150 people were killed in the 6.1-magnitude quake, which hit the most severe part of the high-mountain region where Paktika and Khost provinces meet the Pakistani border.

The United Nations Organization for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, said Meradon residents are among the 700-800 families in the area still living in the open.

Many who live in the counties are concerned about whether they will be able to rebuild before winter in just a few months.

Dawlat Khan, a resident of Jayan district, located in Paktika province, said five members of his family were injured when his house collapsed.

“We are facing many problems. We need all kinds of support, and we are asking the international community and Afghans to help us move forward and help us,” he said.

In another hard-hit village where aid arrived, R Kali, in Barmal district of Paktika province, a man said he had lost his three sons.

Sher Alam, 38, was among those struggling to deal with the fallout, as another man was seen using a shovel to dig his car out of the rubble, and women walked among the rubble with water containers on their heads.

Injured travel miles to help

An estimated 2,000 people have been infected, and many are seeking help from hospitals miles away from their accommodations.

One patient at an Italian-run hospital in Kabul, a woman from the Ghian district of Paktika, said nine members of her family had died.

“Just stay,” she said. “My legs are broken, we have nothing; we eat what the Taliban give us.” She requested that her name be withheld due to security concerns.

Aid efforts are underway but supplies are slow to arrive

UNICEF distributed blankets, tarpaulins, water purification tablets and other hygiene items to some of the quake-hit areas on Saturday.

The World Health Organization has also unloaded medical supplies to local hospitals.

Officials said aid supplies have arrived in Afghanistan from Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Meanwhile, China said it would provide 50 million yuan (£6.1 million) in humanitarian aid.

Aid agencies say the disaster underscored the need for the international community to rethink its policy of cutting funding to Afghanistan due to the Taliban taking control of the country 10 months ago.

The roads became impassable due to rain and landslides
