Wimacariri Board staff exited headquarters after engineering report found risk

The staff will be removed from the offices of the Waimakariri District Council after an engineering report showed that the building was at risk of collapse.

Wimakariere County Council staff are moved out of their buildings in Rangiura after it was discovered that the building is not as safe as they thought.

Chief Executive Jim Palmer said that the preliminary evaluation found that further work is needed to reduce the risk of a partial landslide in the event of a major earthquake.

“The building’s rating is lower than previously thought (40 percent versus at least 67 percent) due to the change in the engineering evaluation of the ductile strength of the reinforcing steel mesh in the concrete floor in part of the building on the upper floor.” He said.

“We made a decision to temporarily restrict the access of employees and the public to the affected parts of the building.”

The customer service counter was not affected, so it will remain open, while some employees will be moved to other locations or required to work remotely by the end of the week.

The board was waiting for a more detailed report from its engineering consultant.

“We would like to reassure the residents that their safety and the safety of employees is our top priority, and we will provide another update when we receive the updated engineering evaluation,” Palmer said.

The service centers in Kayaboy and Oxford remain open, and all Council services will continue to operate as soon as possible from the normal, with the public continuing to access the public areas of the Rangyura Service Center.
