Minnesota reports a 33% increase in syphilis cases in 2021
Minneapolis- Minnesota health officials say the number of cases of syphilis surged in 2021 and reached levels.
Last year, syphilis cases increased by 33% and nearly 1,500 new cases were reported, according to annual data on sexually transmitted diseases released Wednesday by the Minnesota Department of Health.
Studies show that this rise reflects a national trend, but questions remain about what lies behind it, especially the ongoing role of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Health officials have pointed out special concerns related to the outbreak in the Duluth region and the sustained growth of Cass and Beltrami counties in northern Minnesota.
Of the cases detected in Minnesota, 15 were congenital syphilis when someone during pregnancy inherited syphilis into a newborn. Cases of congenital syphilis, which can be fatal to infants, increased by 115% in Minnesota last year.
Health officials are encouraging Minnesota to be regularly tested for sexually transmitted diseases, including pregnant people.
Overall cases of sexually transmitted diseases in Minnesota increased by 1% last year.
The number of cases of syphilis increased sharply, but the number of cases of gonorrhea decreased by 5%. However, the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease, chlamydia, has increased by 3%, with more than 22,000 cases reported.
With regard to HIV infection, Minnesota saw an 8% increase in 2021 with nearly 300 new cases. Health officials say ongoing outbreaks in the Twin Cities and Duluth areas contributed to the rise.
