Is mining the cause of the recent earthquakes?

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (WIS) – Recent earthquakes in the Midlands have left residents asking questions about what’s going on. In response to recent earthquakes, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has provided some answers.

The organization said Thursday morning it was answering questions about whether mining activity in the Elgin area may have been the cause of more than 30 earthquakes in the past year.

DHEC said, “Currently, the mine sites allowed by DHEC in the area are surface craters, most of which are 30 feet deep or less. Their shallowness would not be expected to contribute to seismic activity, especially with recent earthquakes recorded at depths of 6,336 to 12, 672 feet…”

DHEC has also directed members of the curious community to look into the state’s geological history. The Southeast region is the most seismically active country on the East Coast.

The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management (SCEMD) South Carolina Earthquake Manual says most earthquakes in the state occur near shorelines near faults.

The SCEMD Guide says, “Currently, there is no reliable way to predict the time, location and magnitude of an earthquake.” However, he says, “Where earthquakes have occurred before, they can again.”

The largest earthquake in South Carolina history occurred in 1886 in Charleston.

The 1886 earthquake rocked the Summerville/Charleston region on August 31, 1886. The largest earthquake ever recorded was in the southeastern United States, killing 60 people and measuring 7.3. It lasted more than a minute and was felt as far away as Alabama, Ohio, Kentucky and even Cuba.

The SCEMD guide says that if an earthquake of the same magnitude occurred today in Charleston, it would have catastrophic consequences. The department estimates that up to 9,000 people could be hospitalized and 1,000 may be killed.

Up to 200,000 South Carolina residents could be displaced from their homes with up to $20 billion in damages. An earthquake of this magnitude could destroy up to 800 bridges and leave up to 300,000 homes without electricity. SCEMD estimates damage to water infrastructure may take weeks or months to repair.
