Samsung launches free phone disinfection service as coronavirus spreads

Samsung is launching a new program that will offer to clean your smartphone for free using UV-C light, according to the blog SamMobile and an article on Samsung's support website in Malaysia.
The service will be available at Samsung service centers, and SamMobile says it is available in 19 markets.
The support page also suggests that this service will also be available for non-Samsung devices.
Samsung is launching the program as it increasingly focuses on handwashing and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces while the coronavirus continues to spread.

Samsung offers to clean your smartphone for free because global health officials have encouraged the general public to be very attentive to personal hygiene to fight the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.

The program, which SamMobile blog reported earlier, is called the Galaxy disinfection service. It is not known exactly when the program was launched, but Samsung support website in Malaysia suggests that it may have been online on March 13. Samsung says it will disinfect your phone with UV-C light to kill germs and bacteria, much like Phone Soap.

The company also claims to have tested the products it will use to disinfect devices to make sure that they are safe and won't damage your smartphone. It also warns that the effectiveness of the disinfection process may vary depending on the phone model.

Samsung's support page indicates that the service will be available at all Samsung service centers in Malaysia for all owners of mobile devices, whether you have a Samsung phone or not. Samsung didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's question about whether it means it will clean iPhones and other devices made by competing companies.

The service would be available in 19 markets, according to SamMobile, including the United States, Argentina, Chile, Vietnam, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Ukraine. Business Insider was only able to locate the Malaysian support page for Samsung, and Samsung did not immediately respond to our request confirming the markets in which the service will be available.
