Ministry of Health maintains active surveillance of the virus
Local health officials declared on Thursday that Barbados had no suspected or confirmed cases of monkeypox virus, but it guarantees that the island remains vigilant.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health said it would continue to “actively monitor and sensitize” port health personnel regarding the control of monkeypox virus.
On Wednesday, Jamaica became the first Caribbean country To confirm the first case of monkeypox virus. A male patient recently traveled from the United Kingdom and was presented to the public health system on July 5, when he arrived on the island five days ago. He was quarantined during the confirmation test and his close contact was quarantined following contact tracing.
Following development, Dr. Joy St. John, Managing Director of the Caribbean Public Health Department, advised that undue concern was not necessary, but emphasized that Barbados should. Follow the Ministry of Health’s advice and guidance.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently described the outbreak as being distributed in five major regions, including Europe, the United States, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Western Pacific, and Africa.
Monkeypox is a globally important health disease that occurs primarily near the rainforests of Central and West Africa, and its main hosts are rodents and non-human primates such as monkeys. However, current outbreaks have been identified in non-epidemic areas and have spread from person to person in most of the cases found in Europe.
Humans can become infected with the virus through direct contact with infected people or animals with infectious rashes, scabs, or body fluids. Human-to-human transmission can occur as a result of prolonged face-to-face, intimate, physical contact, or contact with items handled by a previously infected individual. Symptoms can occur within 21 days of contact with the case.
The virus usually begins with flu-like symptoms (fever and body aches) and progresses to swollen lymph nodes and widespread rashes on the face and body. The red ridge eventually turns into a blister filled with pus, which becomes a scab. The illness can last about 2-4 weeks.
There is no specific cure for the virus, but medicines can be used to control the symptoms.
The Department of Health and Human Services has promised to continue to inform citizens about the developments of public health of concern.
