The fourth case has been confirmed.
Metro Nashville Public Health Service has identified a fourth putative case Monkeypox In Davidson County.
The department has not yet identified where this Davidson County resident was infected, although 3 other patients It may have been transmitted outside Tennessee.
None of the four required hospitalization, said Matthew Peters, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health. Investigators are reaching out to all those who may have been in close contact with them.
For now, it is unclear if the virus has spread throughout the state.
“We know more cases will occur,” said Dr. Joanna Shokaikai, an infectious disease specialist at the department. “But monkeypox is not as easily transmitted as other infections, such as COVID, so you can rest assured that it will not spread rapidly.”

What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox has historically been a rare disease of the same viral family that causes smallpox, but at a much lower risk. In fact, unlike smallpox, monkeypox is rarely fatal.
According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox is often transmitted from animals to humans, usually in central and western Africa, generally near the rainforest. Prior to this year’s outbreak, monkeypox was found primarily only in individuals who traveled to countries where the virus was endemic.
Symptoms include: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and malaise. Monkeypox can also cause a rash that looks like acne or blisters that can appear on the face, mouth, and other parts of the body.
The illness generally lasts 2-4 weeks. Sometimes people get a rash before other symptoms. At other times people only get a rash.
It does not spread easily
Unlike COVID-19, monkeypox does not spread by accidental contact. Nor does it easily spread in the air.
According to the CDC, it spreads primarily through infectious rashes, scabs, or direct contact with body fluids. According to the CDC, it can also be transmitted through respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face or intimate physical contact.
It may contract when touching an infectious rash or clothing that has come in contact with body fluids. Infected pregnant women can also spread the virus to the fetus.
Monkeypox is transmitted from the onset of symptoms until the rash is completely healed and new skin is formed.
People who are asymptomatic cannot spread the virus to others. According to the CDC, scientists do not know if it can spread through semen or vaginal fluid.
How is it treated?
According to the CDC, there is no treatment specifically designed for monkeypox.

Tennessee has a “limited” supply of vaccines, said Peters of the Metro Health Department. He queried the State Department for questions about the exact supply, but did not respond to Thursday’s inquiry.
Fortunately, the 2022 outbreak in the United States appears to be a mild form of the disease.

Most states have cases
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 41 states We have reported cases of monkeypox, with a total of at least 1,052 cases. The most common are California (161 cases), New York (159), Illinois (152), District of Columbia (82), and Florida (72).
No cases have been reported in neighboring Mississippi and Alabama.
The United States has the fourth highest number of cases in the world after Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany.
Monkeypox infections have so far been reported only in Davidson County, Tennessee.
