Geneva —
The World Health Organization is calling for action to stop the spread of deadly infectious diseases such as monkeypox and Ebola between African animals and humans.
According to a new WHO analysis, zoonotic outbreaks on the African continent increased by 63% between 2012 and 2022 compared to the last decade.
Globally, WHO states that more than 60% of human infections and more than 75% of emerging infectious diseases are caused by pathogens found in wildlife or livestock. These illnesses are said to kill about one billion people and kill millions each year.
Matshidiso Moeti, WHO’s Director of Africa, said zoonosis poses a serious threat to Africa. Over the last decade, she said that animal-borne disease outbreaks account for one-third of the public health events identified in the area.
“Deeper digging reveals that hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola accounts for almost 70% of these outbreaks,” she said. “The rest include monkeypox, dengue fever, anthrax, and plague, among others. The number of monkeypox cases has increased significantly since April of this year, but compared to the same period in 2021. There is positive news that there are still fewer than the peak outbreaks in 2020. “
That year, WHO recorded the highest monthly cases in the region. So far this year, health agencies have reported more than 2,000 suspected cases of monkeypox. Of these, only 203 have been confirmed. Most cases and deaths are male, with an average age of 17 years.
Moeti pointed out that animal-borne infections have been infecting humans for centuries, but the risk of mass infections and death is relatively limited in Africa.
“The risk increases as urbanization progresses into the natural habitat of wildlife on the continent, especially as food demand increases due to the rapid growth of the fast-growing population,” she said. “The addition of improved roads, railroads, and airlinks that remove the natural barriers provided by poor transportation infrastructure paves the way for the spread of zoonotic diseases from remote areas to urban areas.”
Moeti said Africa is not allowed to become a hotspot for emerging infectious diseases. She said she needed an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to counter the threat.
She said human, animal, and environmental health professionals must work with communities to prevent and control zoonotic outbreaks across the continent.
