Miami – The latest COVID-19 variant is hitting the United States as medical researchers look to protect the next generation.
BA.4 and BA.5 are said to spread more easily and evade previous immunity.
Dr. Megan Ranney, Dean of Public Health at Brown University, said:
Hospitalizations and deaths are on the rise, but have not yet reached the peak seen in past surges. Health officials say it’s because of the COVID-19 vaccine. The next era of protection may come in the form of tablets or sprays.
“These are in pre-human or very small phase I human trials,” said Dr. Ranney.
Both require more rigorous and extensive testing before attempting to obtain FDA approval.
However, some medical researchers say that vaccination via tablets or nasal drops deploys more immune defenses to the inner walls of the mouth, nose, and throat, making it difficult for the virus to replicate. It delays the development of new coronavirus variants and may eventually put the COVID-19 pandemic under control.
However, there are hurdles.
“We still have a way to go. The best scenario is months, but if no more money comes, it can be much longer,” Dr. Lanny explained.
For now, health authorities and experts continue to promote vaccinations and boosters for qualified individuals.
Currently, the fourth coronavirus vaccine is available in the United States. On Tuesday, the CDC approved Novavax’s protein-based COVID-19 vaccine as a double-dose primary series for adults.
