Earthquake anniversary highlights Haiti’s housing needs

Haiti (MNN) – The August 14 earthquake in southern Haiti last year killed 2,200 people and destroyed 130,000 homes. Today, the United Nations still cares for the thousands of people who remain homeless.

Demand for housing is high nationwide, but gang activity near ports keeps supply low. In northern Haiti, “people usually own the land, but don’t have the money to build on the land,” says Roslyn Dehart, for Haiti.

The ministry is overwhelmed with requests. We have a lot of people asking us to build a house for them so that they can live [in safety]Diehart says.

It’s a street fight [to survive] with their families.”

Northern Haiti does not experience many earthquakes, so you don’t have to worry about earthquake-resistant homes. However, poverty severely limits housing options for needy families.

A place to call home

Even the simplest house by Western standards – four walls, a roof and a door – is considered a luxury in Haiti. With the help of donors, For Haiti With Love builds safe homes for families and single mothers living in extreme poverty.

“We have two different programmes. Pilgrims’ homes [are sponsored by] A church in Indiana called Pilgrim Lutheran Church. This is for a family,” says Diehart.

“Beginners’ homes are for mothers with children but no husbands. They struggle to take care of the children because they are all on their own. [The starter house is] Great help to them.”

Each new home is a tangible reminder of God’s love and care. “God appears when we hand the keys to people. The first time (the recipients) hold a key in their hand, it’s like the world to them,” says Diehart.

“They are always on their knees to thank God [for] She says something they never thought was possible,” explaining why this was her favorite part of the housing project.
