Mentawai Islands hit by M 5.2 earthquake, BMKG reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale has hit the Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported early in the morning on Monday, August 29.

The earthquake, just 4 minutes after midnight, occurred at 1.00 degrees south latitude and 98.58 degrees east longitude and came from 14 kilometers below the ocean surface.

The BMKG website has explicitly announced that it has not triggered a tsunami warning system but encourages local residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
