Oswego County sprays mosquitoes after testing more positive for deadly EEE virus
OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. — Oswego County will begin aerial spraying on Friday after the deadly EEE virus was found in more mosquitoes, county health officials said.
Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) is a very rare but serious infection. It causes encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, and is often fatal, according to a news release from the Oswego County Health Department. It is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
Horses in New York, Mexico died of virus On August 25, county health officials made the announcement on Tuesday. Horses cannot spread the disease to humans, but they can transmit it to humans through infected mosquitoes, they said.
Human cases of EEE are rare. About a third of people who develop EEE die from the disease, and most survivors suffer brain damage. Since 1971, Onondaga and Oswego counties have reported eight deaths from his EEE.
County health officials say they plan to begin spraying after 6 p.m. on Friday, weather permitting.
The initial area to be sprayed is said to be about 9,000 acres. They said the spray would start at the southern tip of the village in Mexico.
County officials say a second aerial spraying will take place after 6 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting. The second area to be sprayed is about 10,000 acres. It will begin along U.S. Route 11 in Central Square, they said.
County health officials said residents will be notified of changes to the spraying schedule.
County officials are urging residents inside the spray area to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed from 6-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Residents should also close window air conditioner vents, they said.
Pets should also be kept indoors, according to county officials. Anything left outside while spraying must be thoroughly washed with soap and water before use, they said. Gardens should be covered and fruits and vegetables washed before use.
The spray should help slow the spread, but it’s a temporary control measure, county health officials said. Residents should continue to limit their exposure to mosquitoes, they said.
Officials suggest limiting outdoor activity during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Residents are also required to wear insect repellent, cover their skin outdoors, and eliminate standing water around their homes.
