According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, the 6.8-magnitude earthquake injured at least 248 people, with 12 still missing so far.

Several buildings were damaged and electricity was disrupted in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, where at least 37 people died.

At least 28 others were killed on the outskirts of Yan City, with a population of 1.4 million.

The Associated Press, citing state-run CCTV, reported that the quake also caused landslides in the area, causing further damage to homes.

Despite being located 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the epicenter of Monday’s earthquake, tremors were felt in the Sichuan capital Chengdu – where 21 million people are under strict lockdown due to a surge in local Covid-19 cases.
