65 dead after China earthquake amid heat wave, COVID lockdown

Dozens were killed after a strong earthquake hit southwest China on Monday, according to multiple reports.

China’s CCTV reported that at least 65 people died after Monday’s disaster, according to CNN and the Associated Press.

The US Geological Survey said the 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck southwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, around 1 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located about 27 miles southeast of Kangding city.

CCTV said the quake also caused landslides that left one town “extremely damaged,” according to the Guardian.

About 250 people were injured in the quake, including nearly 150 people in the city of Moxie, according to the Associated Press.

CCTV said another 16 people are missing, according to CNN and The Guardian.

The aftershocks continued into Tuesday, affecting an estimated 1 million people, according to CNN.

The Sichuan Seismological Authority has announced that more than 1,000 soldiers have been called in to help with the rescue effort, the Guardian reports.

CCTV said Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered local authorities to “make saving lives a top priority” and “minimize loss of life” in areas most affected by the quake, according to the outlet.

Sichuan is prone to earthquakes due to the Longmenshan Fault, which borders the Sichuan Basin, according to a 2018 article by the American Geophysical Union.

In June, Sichuan was hit by two earthquakes that killed four people and injured dozens, according to The Guardian.

An earthquake struck on Monday as residents were on lockdown due to COVID-19, according to reports. A Chengdu resident, identified by the Guardian as “Qin,” said the lockdown left residents with limited options as they searched for safety.

“Since Chengdu is under epidemic management, people are not allowed to leave their apartment complexes, many of them have rushed to their yards,” Chen told the outlet.

The area also experienced the worst heat wave on record this summer, according to CNN and AFP. The disaster led to a massive drought, during which it was scarce and forest fires broke out.

“So-called extreme weather events will have an even greater impact on our lives and electricity supply,” Li Shu, a climate consultant with Greenpeace Beijing, told CNN. “And we may all need to reconsider whether these extreme events will become the new normal.”
