Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes San Francisco Bay Area

People felt an earthquake in the Bay Area.

Two earthquakes struck the Bay Area within a minute of each other – with a magnitude of 4.4 and 3.9 on the Richter scale – knocking tires out of walls and shaking nerves on Tuesday night. The first quake occurred at 6:39 pm and the second at 6:40 pm, and their epicenter was in Santa Rosa.

People there reported that they felt and felt two major shocks as far north as Mendocino County and as far south as Santa Clara County, according to USGS The ShakeAlert Early Warning System sent alerts that reached people moments before the first earthquake.

“Bravo to the California Earthquake Early Warning System,” wrote one Twitter user, Amanda Stobe. “I had enough time to take my baby while I was under the kitchen table. Husband had enough time to text us and make sure we saw an alert. My mind is kinda amazed.”

By the time the ShakeAlert warning went off on people’s mobile phones, the quake had already been felt within a nine-mile radius of the epicenter, the USGS said. People in Vallejo received an 11.4-second warning before the earthquakes occurred; San Francisco received a warning of 18.8 seconds and Oakland residents received a warning of 19.2 seconds.

Police in Santa Rosa said they had received no reports of serious damage or injuries.

These were the second and third earthquakes to hit SF Bay – on Sunday, a 2.9-magnitude earthquake shook the eastern bay.
