Earthquakes in Taipei witness an earthquake for the second consecutive day

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan on Sunday, the Taiwan Meteorological Bureau said, sending train carriages derailed and causing a convenience store to collapse. The earthquake occurred near Taitung on the southeast coast at a relatively shallow depth of 7 km.

However, the USGS measures the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 and a depth of 10 km.

The epicenter was in Taitung County, which experienced a 6.4-magnitude quake on Saturday and many aftershocks since then, the bureau said.

The government of Hualien County, near Taitung, said two people were trapped in a building housing a convenience store in Yuli, while rescue efforts were underway for three people who had fallen from a damaged bridge.

According to reports, three carriages rolled off the rails at Dongli Station in eastern Taiwan after part of the platform’s canopy collapsed. However, about 20 passengers on board were safely evacuated and unharmed.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for several southern Japanese islands near Taiwan, but later raised them. Earlier, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued a warning for Taiwan but later canceled it.

While the quake could be felt across Taiwan’s buildings, the Bureau of Meteorology said, it briefly shook in the country’s capital, Taipei. Science parks in the southern cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung that are home to major semiconductor factories have reported no impact on their operations due to the recent tremors.

Because of its location at the meeting point of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is prone to earthquakes. In 2016, an earthquake in southern Taiwan claimed more than 100 lives, while a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1999 claimed more than 2,000 lives.
