Taiwan News: A 7.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan. Strong tremors prompt officials to stop trains

The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck Taiwan on Sunday at around 12:14 pm EST. The epicenter of the quake was located 85 kilometers east of Yujing District in Taiwan, the agency said. The powerful earthquake came on the heels of a series of aftershocks that hit the autonomous island off the east coast of China. Some local media also reported the collapse of a two-storey apartment building near the epicenter.

While social media platforms have been filled with horrific videos of the natural disaster, one video shows two men hiding under the roof of a railway junction while a train was shaken by earthquakes. In the wake of the accident, the Taiwan Railway Administration has temporarily suspended trains connecting Hualien and Taitung, the US Geological Survey said. Besides, high-speed rail services have also been cancelled.

In the wake of the powerful earthquake that hit Taiwan, the neighboring Japan Meteorological Agency issued a 3-foot tsunami warning to reach several islands in southern Japan. On the other hand, meteorological officials appealed to residents of the areas to stay away from the coast. Notably, this is the second earthquake in 24 hours. Earlier on Saturday, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan Saturday night in the northern district of Taitung County, which has been hit by several aftershocks since then.
