Unusual Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection Reported in Florida

Tampa, Florida. – The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed that one in Hillsboro County is infected with Naegleria fowleri, a microscopic single-cell amoeba of the water system that attacks the brain.

Amoeba can cause a rare brain infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal. Infection can occur when contaminated water enters the body through the nose. According to DOH, when amoeba enters the nose, it reaches the brain and causes PAM.

The DOH did not specify where in Hillsboro County this latest infection was reported. Also, no details are provided regarding the person’s gender, age, or medical condition. FOX 13 contacted DOH for additional information.

Naegleria fowleri is found in many warm freshwater lakes, ponds, canals, and rivers in the United States, but is more common in southern states.

According to experts, there have been only 37 exposures in Florida since 1962. Experts say the low number of infections makes it hard to see why they are less infected compared to millions of people using the same or similar water across the United States

Infections usually occur when the temperature rises for an extended period of time, resulting in elevated water temperatures and lower water levels. The peak season for this amoeba is July, August and September.

The DOH warns people who frequently swim or dive in Florida’s lakes, rivers, and ponds during warm temperatures about the possible presence of Negrelia Foreri.

Since amoeba comes in through the nasal passages, avoiding contact of the nose with water can prevent adverse health effects on humans. As a precaution, health authorities recommend the following:

• Avoid water-related activities in thermally polluted water, such as warm fresh water, hot springs, and water near power plants.
• Avoid water-related activities in warm fresh water during periods of high water temperature and low water level.
• When participating in water-related activities in warm freshwater bodies such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs, close your nose or use a nose clip.
• Do not dig or stir sediments while participating in water-related activities in shallow, warm freshwater bodies.
• Exposure to amoeba can also occur when using neti pots to rinse the sinuses of cold/allergy-related congestion and when performing religious rituals with tap water. Only use boiling and cooling, distilled, or sterile water to make a netipot sinus wash or to perform a ritual wash.

Persons who experience any of these symptoms after swimming in warm body water are required to contact their healthcare provider immediately: headache, fever, nausea, disorientation, vomiting, stiff shoulders, seizures, Loss of balance or hallucinations.

Officials at DOH said it was essential to see a doctor immediately because the disease progresses rapidly after the onset of symptoms.

DOH emphasizes that the disease is rare and “effective prevention strategies can enable a safe and relaxing summer swimming season.”
