September 21 (UPI) — Dieting by reducing protein intake may be as effective as restricting calories for people trying to combat obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure, a small study suggests.
In other words, save the steak and pass the mashed potatoes.
of study A study by researchers from Brazil and Denmark comparing the effects of a protein- and calorie-restricted diet in patients with metabolic syndrome was published in the journal Nutrients.
They said their findings confirmed previous studies that included experiments in mice.
according to According to the Mayo Clinic, 1 in 3 Americans have metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is defined as a series of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and her type 2 diabetes.
These conditions include elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
“This study showed that reducing protein intake to 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight was sufficient to achieve similar clinical outcomes to caloric restriction, but the need to reduce caloric intake was not necessary. No,” said the study’s lead author, Rafael Ferraz-Bannitz.
Ferraz-Bannitz, a postdoctoral fellow at the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard Medical School, said in a news release that dieting by restricting protein intake is “a more attractive and easy-to-follow nutritional strategy for people with metabolic syndrome.” ”, he said.
The study was conducted by a multidisciplinary team of scientists including scientists from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and the National Cancer Institute.
Twenty-one volunteers with metabolic syndrome were involved and analyzed for 27 days with researchers monitoring their diet. During the period they were admitted to the Hospital das Clinicas of Ribeirao Preto, a teaching hospital of Ribeirao Preto Medical College in São Paulo.
Each volunteer’s daily calorie intake was calculated as a function of baseline metabolism, looking at resting energy expenditure.
One group ate what researchers called the standard Western diet: 50% carbs, 20% protein, 30% fat, but 25% fewer calories. .
The second group’s protein intake was reduced to 10% and caloric intake was adjusted to the baseline energy expenditure of each volunteer.
After 27 days of monitoring, both groups had similar results in terms of lowering blood sugar levels, weight loss, controlling blood pressure, and lowering triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
Both diets improved insulin sensitivity after treatment. Body fat decreased, as did waist and hip circumference, but muscle mass did not,” said Maria Cristina Foz de Freitas, study co-author and professor of medicine at the Brazilian School of Medicine. said in the release.
Scientists noted that reduced body fat is known to be associated with lower blood sugar levels and more normal levels of lipids and blood pressure.
Despite the encouraging results of their study, they noted that the participants’ diets were individualized. We focused on the metabolic syndrome patient population.
But the researchers said it’s tempting to extrapolate the results, saying studies have shown that a vegan diet benefits people with metabolic syndrome, and that excesses common in standard Western diets are less common. We note that low protein intake can be a problem.
