Loons season on life support after 2-0 loss to San Jose – InForum

Street. POLL – Despite losing 2-0 to last-placed San Jose on Saturday, Minnesota United are still alive for a place in the MLS Cup playoffs. But over the past few weeks, Loons’ status has been reduced to life support.

Minnesota (13-14-6) has only managed one out of 18 points available in six games, and their steady finish streak to 46 points has brought them on the verge of losing seventh and final place in the playoffs.

MNUFC entered Saturday’s game in California with a chance to grab a playoff spot with a win and some help. That help came with Real Salt Lake’s draw with LA Galaxy late Saturday night, but Minnesota didn’t play its part in the equation. As a result, the Loons’ dream of climbing into the top four and hosting a first-round match – a club-wide pre-season goal – appears to be dead.

One game before, the loss left the Lons in seventh place in the Western Conference with 45 points, one point against eighth-placed Real Salt Lake and two points against ninth-placed Vancouver.

With nothing left to play this season, San Jose (8-15-10) showed themselves to be the better team at PayPal Park.

“I think they wanted to win the game more than we did, and it showed through their attitude,” said Loons coach Adrian Heath. “And when you think about what was at stake, it would be very hard to swallow it, to be honest.”

Heath wondered about the players’ physical desire to fight, and with what’s at stake, how could that be?

“I wish I knew,” replied Heath. “Maybe it’s some people’s makeup that we have. Maybe we should look at that.”

In the 52nd minute, Minnesota midfielder Kervin Arriaga played the ball back, Brent Kalman sent a long ball forward and Luis Amarilla turned the ball in midfield. Michael Boxall then netted a free kick, and Chia Salinas’ set-piece took a bad deviation from Emmanuel Reynuso and Loans goalkeeper Dane St Clair to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.

After about 20 minutes, Benji Kikanovic beat Boxal in the 71st minute round and hit a shot past St Clair to make the score 2-0.

“I’m not sure where exactly (disappointment) is going,” St Clair said when asked about the past few weeks. “But I think we just need to believe in ourselves. Sometimes I feel like we’re giving up on that first goal, and a lot of times it was a (expletive) goal like tonight. I think we need to do a better job of regrouping and trusting each other to know that we can Fight, go and get results.”

Before either of those goals, Lone’s winger Minder Garcia had a chance to score at the far post, but was unable to get a shot on the frame. It proved to be a major missed opportunity because it was hard to get any chance for Minnesota.

San Jose beat Minnesota 6-2, as Lone’s St. Clair saved Paul Marie’s shot in the eighth minute.

Arriaga of Minnesota received a 10th minute yellow card and will be suspended for accumulating a yellow card for Decision Day’s game against Vancouver at Allianz Stadium on October 9. Arriaga has become the 10th player to miss a game in this manner this season.

Minnesota now has one last chance to rejuvenate and earn a place in the playoffs.
