Wrong place, wrong time

Aftershocks: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake is a fun and utterly shocking documentary, depicting the trials and tribulations during and after the 2015 Nepal earthquake. Also known as the Gorkha earthquake, this natural disaster killed nearly 9,000 people and left 3.5 million others homeless. Entire villages flattened; the destruction of centuries-old buildings; And in Kathmandu, the place looks like a war zone.

Split into 3 episodes, Post Trauma brings together survivors of this horrific tragedy, providing their first-hand accounts of what happened while splitting the focus into three main regions of Nepal. The first follows a number of mountaineers on the summit of Everest, both at Base Camp and Camp 1. After the earthquake, they find themselves stuck in an impossible situation, and with corpses and scarce resources at hand, all hope lies in rescue.

The second story takes place in the depths of Kathmandu. After the earthquake, rescue operations are underway to try to find survivors buried under the mountains of rubble, but this is a race against time. Every second counts, will they find anyone alive?

The third and final story takes place in the Langtang Valley, a remote part of the mountainous region where a group of survivors find themselves tangled with the locals, in a pressure cooker setting that looks like it’s going to explode at any moment.

All three of these tales intertwine around an animated map that flies between different regions while simultaneously showing the distance and space in which these people are spread out. It’s a great way to extrapolate how devastating this earthquake actually was, while bringing in many different perspectives at the same time and dealing with what happened as well as possible.

There is a lot of raw footage captured from that time, and the show splits its time between those footage, photos taken by various survivors (most notably of a woman named Athena tagged with the Israelis in the third story) and mixed interviews with the head of the conversation that It allows us to get into the mindset of these men and women.

The post-shock musical score is also great and it’s something that will fly under the radar for a lot of people talking about this. There is a very devastating moment in Episode 2 where you see that the music works perfectly. Here, a resident of Langtang Village mentions all the people he lost in this earthquake. The music slowly escalates until it reaches the same volume as his, giving the allure to the situation and the heavy losses many suffered during this time.

The documentary isn’t overly welcome either, though one could argue that the first episode – which runs 38 minutes – could have been a bit longer to feature more raw footage from the earthquake, with news reports possibly adding to the tension. It’s a minor point even though it’s a very good series.

Netflix knows how to make excellent post-traumatic documentaries: Everest and the Nepal earthquake are no exception. This is another shocking nature documentary, and an absolutely must-watch.
