The Big Tremor – More Than Just A Workout

The Big Tremor – More Than Just A Workout

The Great Vibration Earthquake exercise is fast approaching. It is a great time not only to participate in earthquake exercise at work and with your family, but it provides an opportunity to discuss disaster preparedness with your family, friends, and community.

The Great Shake Earthquake Exercise takes place on Thursday, October 20, at 10:20 a.m. As part of the exercise, all of the City of Edmunds’ buildings, departments, and divisions will be involved.

Usually, on the first Monday of the month, the All Hazards Siren Test (AHAB), located on Dayton Street, in Port Edmunds, is tested at noon with Westminster Chimes and a voice message. During the major tremor (third Thursday of October), the actual tsunami siren will be activated for a full three minutes. The event’s time coincides with the date, so this year, the siren will be fully activated on Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 AM.

Sirens are designed to be heard only outdoors. If you want to be notified of a tsunami or other natural disaster while you’re indoors, it’s best to have a NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radiofor notification.

As this is a state, county, and citywide event, I invite all citizens to meet me at the corner of Dayton Street and Sunset Street (147 Dayton Street) at 10:15 a.m. on October 20, to hear the howling of actual sirens and answers to questions of readiness of any person who may accept my open invitation to participate in the exercise.

I would also like to invite citizens who are at home or working to go out and listen to the sirens. Please let me know if you hear the wailing or not. You can send your results to me at [email protected]. The results will provide details about how far people can hear the siren if they are outdoors, on a beach or boat while the siren is activated.

More preparedness information:

Hurricane Ian was devastating to several countries, affecting millions of families. There was notice to evacuate the area before the event, (save thousands of lives), yet the effect was almost unimaginable to everyone.

Working on family plans for emergencies and disasters, is critical to all communities, families and friends. What if a hurricane was a large, unnoticed earthquake (like the one along the South Whidbey Fault that goes virtually under the city), affecting the area, cutting off electricity, water, and communications for days?

If you are not able to meet your family during The Great Shakeout, make time during the weekend or any other night of the week to discuss some of the following issues:

Do you know how to communicate with family members if they are all separated by work or school or perhaps by running errands to the local store when the event occurs?

What does your home, car and rental insurance cover in the event of a disaster?

Do you have a Go Kit or Get Away Bag in your car, at home, at work or school, in case you can’t get home?

Do you have an extra prescription that will last for a few days?

– Are your personal contacts stored in your cell phone, which may not work due to power and cell tower issues?

Do you have a few dollars in denominations of $1, $5, and $10 in case you need to buy something, and the cash register won’t work due to energy loss, thus eliminating credit card use?

Do you have enough food and water to get you home for at least two weeks until help arrives and facilities are restored?

Is anyone CPR and First Aid certified, and are there any essential medical supplies in the home?

Does the person living with you have a medical condition that requires monitoring, such as a need for oxygen, dialysis, or diabetes?

What if the person you live with is disabled and/or has mobility problems? What if you live alone? What do you do with your pet? Where will they stay? What will they eat? Do they have an ID in case they break up with you?

Disaster preparedness starts with each of us and will help reduce the impact of any event on us, our families and our community.

If you would like someone to talk about disaster and disaster preparedness at your community meeting, condominium association, or workplace, feel free to contact me at [email protected].

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
