Gates Foundation pledges $1.2 billion to eradicate polio globally
BERLIN (AP) — The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation says it will commit $1.2 billion to efforts to eradicate polio worldwide.
The funds will be used to support the implementation of the strategies of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative by 2026. The initiative seeks to end the polio virus in his last two endemic countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the foundation said in a statement Sunday.
The funds will also be used to stop the outbreak of new variants of the virus. The announcement was made at the World Health Summit in Berlin on Sunday.
The foundation said in a statement on its website that it has donated nearly $5 billion to polio eradication initiatives. This initiative seeks to integrate the polio campaign into the broader health service, while expanding the use of a new oral polio vaccine type 2.
The group is also working to strengthen national health systems so that countries can prepare for future health threats, the statement said.
“The final step towards eradication is the most difficult yet, but our Foundation remains committed to a polio-free future and we are optimistic that it will happen soon.” Foundation CEO Mark Suzman said.
The Eradication Initiative is a public-private partnership led by a group of governments including the Gates Foundation, Rotary International, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
