Remember the earthquake after 33 years

Oakland, CA (Crowns) – October 17, 1989 – a date many in the Bay Area will not forget. Monday marks 33 years since the Loma Prieta earthquake rocked the region, killing more than 60 people and injuring more than 3,000 others.

The Loma Prieta earthquake caused billions of dollars in damage to the region.

But a retired USGS scientist says that because of the quake, a tremendous amount of work has gone into strengthening the infrastructure with new bridges, highway overpasses and improving the water system.

“It was a shock to the Bay Area,” said USGS geologist David Schwartz. “There was a real air of complacency.”

The earthquake surprised the public and even the scientific community.

When Schwartz joined the USGS in 1985, he said the focus was on the San Andreas Fault in Southern California. The Bay Area has not experienced a major earthquake since the 7.9 San Francisco earthquake in 1906.

“The Bay Area was basically an afterthought,” Schwartz said.

That changed after Loma Prieta. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.9 – destroyed bridges, leveled houses and buildings. 63 people were killed and more than 3,000 were injured. The shaking lasted for an excruciating 15 seconds.

“The tremor was horrible,” said Neil Connerty, owner of the Santa Cruz Bookstore.

Coonerty store is close to the epicenter. His businesses and much of Pacific Street were in ruins.

“This is the tent we worked in for three years right after our building was destroyed,” Connerty said.

The library is rebuilding and thriving business.

“We had 400 people in hard hats carrying all those books in there, so we could keep going,” Connerty said.

The days of Loma Prieta became mere memories adorning the walls of his library. After about 30 years, scientists are confident that Loma Prieta has better prepared the Gulf region for the next great earthquake.

“There is a much better understanding of how the ground shakes when a major earthquake occurs, and building codes and building codes are constantly being improved,” Schwartz said.
