Great Nevada earthquake shake-out exercise planned for Thursday

Nevada Thursday is encouraged to land, cover and hold as part of the Great Nevada ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake safety training. The event, also scheduled internationally, is October 20 and 10:20 a.m.

Nevada is at greater risk of earthquakes than other parts of the country—it is one of the most seismically active states in the country. According to the Southern California Seismic Center, Nevada has experienced 76 earthquakes of “potentially destructive magnitude” — 5.5 on the Richter scale or higher — since the 1850s.

The City of Reno felt a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck southwest of Smith Valley in July 2021 and forced the evacuation of City Hall.

Smaller earthquakes are also not uncommon. During a five-month period in 2008, a series of earthquakes west of Reno near Mogul caused residents to tie up their televisions and yank heavy objects off walls.

Local public safety officials say that planning ahead and knowing what to do can keep you safe during an unexpected rumble. The University Police Department is one of several Nevada agencies participating in this week’s training.

“Earthquake drills help promote awareness and safety,” said Arnold Vasquez, assistant director of police services for the university. “During an earthquake, you may only have seconds to protect yourself. Practice helps you prepare for a response.”

ShakeOut offers a number of exercise manuals and planning documents to help schools, government agencies, hospitals, and workplaces manage their earthquake drills.

University police officials shared this advice for staying safe during the earthquake:

If you’re inside a building, get down on the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table or crawl against an interior wall and protect your head, then continue until the shaking stops. Stay indoors until you are sure it is safe to get out. If you are outside, find an area free of buildings, trees, light poles and power lines, then drop, cover and hold on. If you are driving, stop to an obvious place and stop and stay there with your seat belt on. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid any bridges or ramps that may have been damaged.

They also suggest downloading a public safety app in case you need help in the event of a real earthquake.
