Earthquake hits flood-hit Victoria

An earthquake hit a flood-ravaged area of ​​Victoria, with dozens of residents feeling the ground shaking at around 9am.

The 3.4-magnitude earthquake occurred near Mansfield, an area affected by torrential rain and storms over the past week — including more than 45 mm on Friday.

Geoscience Australia says it has received 94 substantive reports so far, with news of the earthquake leaving locals stunned.

“Apparently there was an earthquake in Mansfield today, we have flooding and more to come, what next?!” A woman wrote on Twitter.

Another said, “Victoria – we have floods and now we have an earthquake.”

It’s the same area that was hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in September last year, a force that destroyed buildings and cracked roads.

The 2021 earthquake was felt in Canberra, Sydney and Tasmania.

The body of a man was found in flood waters northwest of the epicenter

Two deaths were recorded in recent floods across the state, including a 65-year-old man whose body was discovered this morning in Natalia, about a two-hour drive from Mansfield.

The man was last seen on a tractor on a property off Blacksmith Road on Tuesday afternoon, but concerns were raised when he failed to return home by 10 p.m.

Emergency services conducted a search of the property overnight and found the unoccupied tractor in the floodwaters.

Tragically, a family member found the man’s body around 8.45 a.m. Wednesday in floodwaters on a nearby road.
