5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes South Bay. The dog and I are still under the kitchen table.

SAN JOSE – A 5.1-magnitude earthquake followed by a 3.1 aftershock struck the South Bay late Tuesday morning, shaking windows, shelves, and nerves throughout the Bay Area.

According to the US Geological Survey, the initial earthquake struck at 11:42 a.m. with an epicenter near Mount Hamilton likely along the Calaveras Fault with a second tremor at 11:46 a.m.

“One of the reasons we felt the earthquake so strongly even though it was a 5.1 is because it was a shallow earthquake,” said Kimberly Plesniak of the San Jose State Department of Geology.

People felt the earthquake all over the Bay Area. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

“SJFD has not received any emergency calls related to this morning’s #earthquake,” San Jose Fire officials wrote.

The BART service stopped for several minutes followed by system checks. Passengers have been informed that there will be significant delays as crews perform safety measures.

VTA and Caltrain have also announced delays in performing safety checks on their systems.
