Cincinnati Children’s prepares for possible spike in RSV cases
Cincinnati — Children’s hospitals across the country are flooded with children infected with the respiratory virus RSV. Dayton Children’s Hospital doctors report that nearly all of the hospital’s 181 beds are now full.
Locally, Cincinnati Children’s Officials say they aren’t worried about running out of beds.
“We’ve had a lot of practice over the last few years to address the respiratory viral surge of COVID,” said Elizabeth Schlaudecker, M.D., medical director of infectious diseases at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
Schlaudecker said the new emergency room will allow the hospital to treat more patients.
“I have a lot of plans in place in case I need additional help,” she said. “We were able to get it, and we’ve used other spaces as needed.”
Parents choosing to take their child to the emergency room when their child’s symptoms may be manageable by a specialist or primary care physician can strain the system.
“I usually tell people that if they have respiratory symptoms, such as coughing or sneezing, it’s okay to stay home,” Dr. Schlaudecker said. No, but if symptoms start to get worse and last longer than the usual 7 days or so, it’s time to call primary care… doctor.”
The main warning signs of respiratory syncytial virus in infants are difficulty breathing and loss of appetite, according to Dr. Schlaudecker.
There is no vaccine against RSV. Dr. Schlaudecker said there is still plenty of time to ensure that eligible children are protected with the flu vaccine before flu season hits full swing.
