With RSV cases surging nationwide and surging closer to home, there is new hope for parents looking to protect their children.
Minneapolis (FOX 9) – as in the case of RSV Spike Across the country and at home, there is a new hope for parents trying to protect their children.
This week, pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced Promising data from a phase 3 trial of an RSV vaccine specifically designed to protect newborns.
The company plans to submit the vaccine for final approval by the end of the year.
Minneapolis-based Allina Health participated in a 2020 vaccine trial with infectious disease specialist Frank Rhame, Ph.D., as principal investigator.
“RSV is completely on our heads, hitting pediatric hospitals,” said Rhame.
Doctors say cases of RSV infection in older children are increasing
Doctors say they see more cases of RSV among older children than usual.
Given the current outbreak of the disease, he says a vaccine is unlikely to become a reality soon.
“What it showed was a lot of efficacy in preventing hospitalization in children under 3 months, and pretty good, like 60%, in children under 6 months.
A vaccine has been in development for many years and will be the first vaccine against RSV.
This injection is given to pregnant women in their third trimester and provides significant immunity when the baby is born.
“In general, it is more difficult to vaccinate children under six months. The only way to get antibodies against it is through your mother,” said Rahm.
If approved, the vaccine could be released to the public later next year, Rham said.
In the midst of the current wave of RSV, Dr. Rhame recommends keeping babies away from anyone with a runny nose or respiratory symptoms.
