At least six people were killed when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Lower Himalayas early Wednesday morning, triggering tremors in northern India and parts of Nepal and sending people out of their sleep in dozens of towns and villages.

The National Center of Seismology said the epicenter of the 6.3-magnitude earthquake at 1.57 am was in Nepal, about 90 kilometers east and southeast of Pithuragarh. The area has been experiencing less strong earthquakes in the past few days.

Mild aftershocks were also felt in Uttarakhand-Nepal region at 3:15 am and 6:27 am. The central monitoring station said the strength of the two tremors was 3.6 and 4.3, respectively.

The National Seismological Center of Nepal said an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 was recorded at 2:12 am. The epicenter was the Dottie area.

Two moderate earthquakes were preceded by the strongest quake that shook western Nepal, a 5.7-magnitude tremor at 9.07pm on Tuesday, and a 4.1-magnitude quake shortly after 9.56pm. She added that the epicenter of the earthquake was intact.

Nepali Interior Ministry spokeswoman Phanendra Pokharel said six people were killed in the quake.

Pokharel transferred to the PTI agency by phone five seriously injured people. A police post and eight homes collapsed due to the earthquake.

Bhola Bhatta, acting chief of district police office in Dhoti, Nepal, said the six victims were killed by the wreckage of houses damaged during the quake.

The tremors were felt in Delhi and the surrounding areas in Ghaziabad, Gurugram and even in Lucknow which knocked people out of their sleep.

Several people have shared their experiences on Twitter, posting videos of people rushing out of their homes and neighbors gathering in groups, huddling through their phones trying to figure out what happened and where the epicenter was. One of the videos showed a chandelier shaking.

“I am only 80 km away from the epicenter of this earthquake…. I tell you guys… I was in a deep sleep. My table started hitting the wall…. Almira was making a sound….and my bed shook….Continue what At least 50 to 70 seconds,” wrote Dinesh Sharma, who said he is staying at Bilibet in Uttar Pradesh near the border.

“The earthquake was quite evident in Lucknow as well,” Tanmay Singh added.

Neha Yadav, another Twitter user, said she has been staying in Delhi for four years and has never felt such tremors.

Lawyer Rahul Agrahari, who lives in Faridabad near Delhi, was eloquent in his description.

He said, “It was as if the floor was so dull that I fell asleep on the floor, and directed me to lga bhoot h and then Google kiya to identify it. Describing how he collapsed from his sleep because of the earthquake and thought it was a ghost. He didn’t realize it was an earthquake until after he Googled it .

“It’s 2 am and people are walking in the streets….cause – #earthquake,” Akash Biswas said, sharing a video of people moving around in a street.

Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi was among those who took to Twitter. “I didn’t want to tweet but one can safely say it felt like an earthquake!” I wrote on the microblogging site.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also used social media and wrote, “I hope you all are safe.”

Congress leader Radhika Khera urged people to “stay alert and safe”.

Radio jockey Ronak said, “It was scary… very scary.”

Delhi Residents Welfare Societies said there were no reports of any kind of damage or injury in their areas.

“We haven’t received any report of structural damage or injuries from any RWA. However, there was some panic because people couldn’t tell what was going on. We were scared. People went out of their homes for a few minutes. However, there was a little panic.” Atul Goyal, Head of Joint Action for Residents United, said things calmed down after a while.

Kritima Bhabta, 25, a resident of Amar colony in south Delhi, shared her experience saying it was “scary”.

“I felt tremors for 10 seconds in a row. It was scary. The doors and windows were shaking and I couldn’t tell what was happening. I knew from social media it was,” she said.

“Omg just hit #earthquake…I feel like in Delhi I hope everything is OK in Nepal (sic),” Krrish Andrew said in a tweet on Twitter.

People fled their homes in panic in a number of towns of Uttarakhand as tremors were felt across the hill state, including in Pithuragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Champawat, Uddam Singh Nagar, Nainital, Rudraprayagh, Chamoli, Tehri, Puri, Haridwar, Uttarakshi and Dehradun districts.

Many of them sent messages on their mobile phones to their relatives to inform them of their safety and inquire about them.

A report from Pithoragarh, citing District Disaster Management Officer BS Mahar, said that there is no information on any damage to life and property from any part of the district.

“I woke up suddenly and ran outside after I heard the rattling of the windows and saw the fan swinging,” said Prabha, a resident of Kashni village in Pithuragarh.

“I felt a second tremor at 6.29 am. But it was lighter compared to that,” said shop owner Pramod Dwivedi in the Munsyar sub-district of Pithuragarh.

However, there was no official confirmation of the second tremor.

The Himalayan region of Uttarakhand and neighboring Nepal has experienced low-magnitude earthquakes over the past two days.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake’s epicenter was 21 km from Depayal in Nepal.

NCS data showed that the area experienced at least two earthquakes, with a magnitude of 4.9 and 3.5, late Tuesday evening.

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale hit Uttarakhand on Sunday with an epicenter 17 kilometers east and southeast of Uttarakshi.
