Magic back to life

July 7, 2020 – Life in Zagreb after the earthquake is back to normal, and if you were a visitor, the city has never been more charming.

After 63 days of closure on ideal Hvar, I have traveled a lot around Croatia in recent weeks. As I wrote earlier, while many dreamed of traveling and beaches on the virgin Adriatic during self-isolation, there was only one place I really missed and couldn’t wait to see again.

Zagreb.

Part of the reason, of course, is that my country was closed on one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world, but Zagreb continued to contact me. The horror of the earthquake over Corona was a tragedy, and I felt many friends in the city.

Another reason was the impressive response from Zagreb to promote itself to the world in the weeks that followed. Since most of the destinations have settled with the slow promotion of Stay Safe, Travel Later, Zagreb is filled with a number of innovative campaigns to include locals and visitors alike. It seems as if there was no corner in the Croatian capital that has not been inspected.

One thing I’ve learned on my travels is in recent weeks every person has their own view of things based on their individual closing experience. Getting a view of the Adriatic and reaching the sea made me more comfortable than most of the time just by turning off my laptop after reporting the corona all day, and I could only imagine what it would have been like when hiding in an apartment during an epidemic and several earthquakes . Zagreb is still in agony, but it is also returning to something like normalcy after devastating earthquakes.

Instead it is charming too. I have been several times in the past two months, and I can honestly say from a visitor’s point of view that I didn’t find her more beautiful or inviting. Whatever your stereotype from Zagreb before, I think it might change if you were going to visit now. Come.

Dolac Market, the pulse of city life with its amazing fresh produce, and the majestic Zagreb Cathedral – a symbol of the city’s earthquake pain – are behind it.

The greenery of parks in central Zagreb is divine right now, and many choose to relax there with a book. After these dreadful few weeks, the surface view outside is relaxing. The center is free of earthquake damage to buildings, as well as a lack of tourists. The air appears cleaner, and the addition of sparrows is welcome.

The tram started running again along Ilica and Ban Gelasic only a few days ago after extensive work, but before that, people took back the streets. I felt normal somehow.

But the thing that I really noticed is how vibrant Zagreb is right now, domestically. It seems that wherever you go, something is happening. Concerts in the park, open-air opera in front of the Croatian National Theater.

Just over a month ago, Forbes published a list of the 20 most safe places to go past Corona, and Zagreb was on the list. Certainly we have not reached the stage after the aura, but Croatia did a great job in containing the virus, especially in Zagreb when it had to deal with the additional earthquake disaster. Days after no new cases in all of Croatia, more cases have been reported, and there are currently 897 active cases in the country. To give it some perspective with other countries, there were only 5 patients on the ventilator at the time of writing (July 6), and the number of coronal deaths in all of Croatia in the last 30 days was 9.

Those who decide to visit Zagreb now will find much to do with the city returning to life after its darkest hours.

The Art Park Zagreb project started in 2016. It has successfully improved the summer of Zagreb since then. This beautiful park, but once deserted, is located in the city center. It has been revitalized and became the first street park in Croatia.
