Here’s why flu and RSV are spiking in Monroe County.
Health officials are appealing to the public to take the flu more seriously. The message comes amid a significant increase in influenza and RSV cases nationally and locally.
In just one week, Monroe County doubled its flu and RSV cases from 248 to 609.
Kathleen Robischon, Ph.D., Senior Medical Director, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, said: Robichon added that fewer people are getting the flu vaccine than in previous years. She said this could be a sign of vaccine fatigue.
“People have had the COVID vaccine and may be hesitant to get additional vaccines,” Robichon said.
Increased cases often lead to increased hospitalizations and deaths, especially among the most vulnerable such as the elderly, people in nursing homes, pregnant women, and those with underlying medical conditions.
“We worry about pneumonia and so on. A lot of people are hospitalized with pneumonia because it becomes a more serious condition,” she said.
A recent report from Monroe County shows more RSV-related hospitalizations than influenza. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 5, the county confirmed his 238 hospitalizations with RSV. About half of those patients are under the age of two.
Dr. Edward Walsh, an epidemiologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center, said: He said it was unusual to see so many RSV cases in a given season.
“Two years of no virus activity may have weakened the immune system in people who weren’t infected with the virus,” Walsh said. is also abnormal, he added. He believes this is partly the result of children contracting the virus at school and carrying it back to their parents.
Two people have died from RSV in Monroe County, according to preliminary county reports. These individuals were between He’s 65 and He’s 84.
