BLM movement forces English cricket to face ‘awkward truths’
London (AFP) – English cricket chefs said the Black Lives Matter movement had forced them to face “awkward truths” when they announced measures Tuesday to increase diversity.
The Cricket Board of England and Wales wants to apply the “Rooney Rule” to address the lack of black and ethnic minority (BAME) coaches.
First implemented in the NFL, the rule states that at least one ethnic minority candidate is interviewed for each position advertised.
The ECB also plans to introduce an anti-discrimination charter and code.
England captain Ben Stokes said players would show a “gesture” of support for the fight against racial injustice when international cricket returns with a test against the West Indies on Wednesday, although he didn’t stop saying players would take a knee.
Both England and the West Indies wear BLM logos on their shirts.
ECB President Tom Harrison said speaking of black former teammates had been a chastening experience in recent weeks.
“In addition to most of society, after the Black Lives Matter movement, we have had to confront some uncomfortable truths,” Harrison said in a conference call.
“We have listened and will continue to listen carefully to the experiences of black people in cricket and society, and we thank those who have worked tirelessly and spoke boldly to open conversations about the change our sport is to create.
“We have made great strides in many areas to become a more inclusive and diverse sport, but we realize that there is much more to do.”
The ECB said it wanted to increase the diversity of its own governance and that of the 18 top-notch provinces, saying the goal was to “have at least 30 percent women and a BAME goal, guided by the composition of their local people as soon as possible “.
