Beijing converts the Hong Kong hotel into the New National Security Office

HONG KONG Beijing opened its new national security office in Hong Kong on Wednesday, turning a hotel into the unusual shopping and commercial district of Causeway Bay into its new headquarters.

The office will oversee the Hong Kong government’s implementation of Beijing’s broad national security legislation that will condemn acts of secession, destruction, terrorism and clashes with foreign forces with life imprisonment.

The head of the office, Zhang Yanxiong, and Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam attended the opening ceremony at the former Metropark Hotel, which offers views across the city’s Victoria Harbor.

The law establishes for the first time continental security agents in Hong Kong with the power to investigate and prosecute national security crimes and allows extradition to the territory of the country for trial in the courts controlled by the Communist Party.

Beijing enacted the law in his free city last week, pushing the former British colony on a more authoritarian path and condemning by some Western governments, lawyers and rights groups.

Critics of the law fear it will suppress the coveted freedoms in the governed Chinese city, while supporters say it will bring stability after a year of sometimes violent protests that plunged the city into its biggest crisis in decades.
