43 students from a teacher’s college in Guerrero state suddenly disappeared on September 26, 2014.
Investigations by the former Mexican administration of Enrique Pea Nieto concluded that they were apprehended by police and handed over to the Guerreros Unidos criminal group. Their bodies were burned in a landfill and then thrown into a river in Cocula municipality – a theory that was called, “historical truth.”
But an investigation by Argentine forensic experts disputed that hypothesis, causing the whole disappearance to be shrouded in mystery for years. President Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador pledged to reveal the truth, setting up a commission which reopened the investigation and started all over again.
The new discovery comes from six pieces of waste that were sent to a laboratory at the University of Innsbruck in Vienna, Austria, where they were analyzed for months, the Office of the Attorney General of Mexico said on Twitter.
The evidence, they said, was not found in the landfill or river, further opposing the previous administration’s investigation. Instead, the bones were found about 800 meters away “where the historical truth is created,” the attorney general’s office said.
“Undoubtedly this marks the beginning of a new path in the investigation that not only overturned the so-called historical truth, but also generates the conditions for the indications, evidence, investigations carried out to clarify the events that unfortunately took place in Ayotzinapa,” said the Mexican secretary. for Human Rights Alejandro Encinas.
