DENVER A shortage of coins across the country has caused some Denver companies to pinch pennies.

“Right now, I don’t have a penny,” said Nabi Hossain, director of the City Bakery Caf. “The owner, when he went to the bank to get more money, he could only get one roll from the bank.”

His coffee is hardly alone. Denver convenience stores, restaurants and gas stations remind customers that an exact change may not be possible. Coins and nickels are hard to find at the bank.

According to a spokesperson for the Treasury Department, the shortage of coins occurs due to a change in the way Americans spend money during a global pandemic. Many coins have also been temporarily withdrawn from circulation to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The impact is most noticeable in businesses that still use money, such as small restaurants and thrift stores. But with many contactless payments, others barely notice the change.

“I’ll be honest, I don’t even remember the last time I used coins. I think maybe six months ago,” said a boss at City Bakery Caf.

The U.S. Mint will soon increase production of coins for the rest of the year, and officials say as businesses adapt to the new payment systems, the flow of coins will likely also adapt.
