Minnesota health officials discuss the latest status on COVID-19, RSV, and influenza statewide.
ST. PAUL, Minnesota — The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is urging people to protect themselves from COVID-19, flu and RSV as the holidays approach.
Minnesota Health Commissioner John Malcolm State epidemiologist Dr. Ruth Linfield held a brief conference call with members of the media on Tuesday.
In his opening remarks, Malcolm said, “I want to acknowledge that the past three years have been a tremendous challenge for our state, our country, and the world at large.”
Malcolm said he understands that many people are “tired” of all health precautions, but the risks remain and the public needs to remain “vigilant.”
Dr. Linfield says less than 20% of Minnesotans are up to date with the COVID vaccine.
She also said Minnesota hospitals are fighting highly active influenza.
Dr Linfield said health officials are seeing a spike in hospitalizations this year after two mild flu seasons in 2020 and 2021. More than 2,150 people are hospitalized. That’s double his number of flu hospitalizations in the last two winters.
Health officials have also confirmed 900 flu outbreaks in schools and 40 in nursing homes.
Dr Lynfield said officials have also seen many hospitalizations due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) seen in recent years.
She said there is no vaccine against RSV, but a vaccine against the virus is in development.
Both Linfield and Malcolm are urging people to follow the health precautions started during the pandemic.
Tips like wearing a mask in crowded indoor areas, not going to work if you’re sick, washing your hands throughout the day, and keeping your immunizations up to date.
