A 3.6-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in an open space area struck the city of El Cerrito, Bay Area, at 3:39 a.m. on Saturday morning, December 17, 2022.

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake centered in the East Bay shook people around the Bay Area early Saturday morning, the US Geological Survey reported.

A short shaker struck at 3:39 a.m. PST with a depth of 3.6 miles (5.8 km), about 0.6 miles northeast of the city of El Cerrito. The epicenter appears to be in the Hillside Natural Area, an open space owned by the city of El Cerrito.

On the USGS community intensity map, people reported feeling the earthquake throughout the area as far south as Fremont and as far north as behind Vallejo.

The Gulf region has experienced strong seismic activity in recent months with a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hitting on October 25th. This earthquake was the largest felt in the region since 2014.
