Scientists create a noise canceling window that eliminates external noise

This system works like the noise canceling technology found in high-end headphones. The microphone captures the actual noise and the speaker emits sound waves to cancel it.
Researchers at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the University of Southampton in Singapore, who came up with this device, claim that it can be used in commercial windows.
They say the cost of the window may increase, but people will keep it cool and will reduce the need for air conditioning.
Principle proof study was published in the journal Science reportDetails of the prototype, using 18 microphones and 24 speakers to eliminate half of the sound passing through the window.
The 4.5cm speakers were arranged in a grid pattern on a bar attached to the inside of the window, but in future device iterations, very small speakers may be hidden and invisible.
The system has been tested on road traffic, train and aircraft noise and has reduced noise by 10 decibels for sounds above 300Hz.
“Compared to noise canceling headphones, what we achieved is much more technically challenging because we needed to control the noise not only around the ear, but in a large open area,” the lead author of the study. ..

NTU researchers are currently working with government agencies in Singapore to reduce the size of gadgets and reduce manufacturing costs.
