A 4.3-magnitude earthquake hits Mizoram, and the eighth earthquake in three weeks

Mizoram earthquake: A 4.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Mizoram on Thursday, which was mainly felt in Chamhay, which is on the India-Myanmar border, officials said.

This is the eighth tremor to be reported in the mountainous northeastern state within three weeks.

The earthquake occurred at 2.28 pm and the epicenter was 23 km southwest of the city of Champaign, according to the National Seismology Center.

She added that the depth of the earthquake was 10 km.

Maria CT Zuali, Deputy Commissioner of Chambhai District, told PTI that the tremor was felt in several villages and town of Chambhai.

“There were no reports of injuries or property damage in the town of Champhai. Reports are expected from various parts of the region.”

This is the third earthquake to hit the Chambhai region in the past six days and the eighth to hit the state since June 18.

An earthquake of 4.6 magnitude struck the region on July 3. It was followed by another 4.6-magnitude jolt that jolted Shambhai on July 5.

Besides Champhai, a series of tremors also rocked Saitual and Serchhip between June 18 and June 24.

The epicenter of the first earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on June 18 was in the Champaign region. Another earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1, struck the neighboring Saitul region on June 21.

An earthquake measuring 5.3 degrees shook Chambhai again on June 22. A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Cership region the next day. On June 24, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Shanghai region.

The officials also said that at least six aftershocks were observed between June 23 and June 24 in Khobong and the neighboring villages in Chamhay District.
