Practitioners will be able to prescribe the mpox vaccine to eligible at-risk people starting January 16.
The vaccine has not yet been approved by the drug regulator, Medsafe, but 5,000 vials of vaccine, enough for 20,000 people, have become available.
Deputy Health Minister Ayesha Verrall said in a statement on Monday that the vaccine could be prescribed by a doctor after consultation and provided in line with section 29 of the Medicines Act.

“This vaccine has not yet been approved by Medsafe, so consultations are needed,” Verrall said.
“The company responsible for the vaccine will soon apply to Medsafe.”
The first eligible persons for the vaccine are:

- Close physical contact with someone infected with mpox, such as a sexual partner or housemate
- Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who have multiple sexual partners, and trans and cisgender women who are in intimate relationships with these qualified men
- Those who have been recommended vaccination by a specialist.
For those who have been in close contact with an infected person, vaccination within four days of exposure “provides the greatest chance of avoiding illness”.
Beginning January 10th, you can complete an initial assessment to see if you are at risk for mpox or call Healthline on 0800 116 672 between 8am and 8pm to find out.
Initially, the mpox consultation service was set up to prioritize the first dose for the target population, with the second dose recommended after a minimum of 28 days and a maximum of 2 years.
Additional vaccines are expected to arrive in Aotearoa later this year.
As of January 9, New Zealand had reported 41 cases of mpox, but Verrall said the virus had not gained a foothold in New Zealand in 2022 like it has elsewhere.
