Did you feel that? 2.8 earthquake shakes Wasatch Front

Salt Lake City, Utah (ABC4) — The Wasatch Front was rocked by a 2.8-magnitude earthquake late Tuesday night, leaving many Utahs asking each other, “Did you feel that?”

The epicenter was located on the other side of the mountain in Morgan County, about 18 miles from Salt Lake City. The tremors occurred just before 10 pm on Tuesday, January 10.

Cache County was rocked by a series of low-magnitude earthquakes

Commenters on a post from the Facebook group “You know you’re from Bountiful, UT if…” reported feeling the earthquake from Ogden to Holladay. Some said they did not feel the quake but they heard the quake and mistook it for a snow plow passing by.

According to Michigan Tech University, an earthquake of Tuesday’s magnitude is often felt and can only cause minor damage. It is estimated that about half a million of these earthquakes strike annually.

No damages were reported from the latest 2.8 earthquake, but the quake joined many that were felt in Cache County earlier this month. Within 24 hours, Cache County was hit by three earthquakes measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale, with more than 100 people reportedly feeling the earthquake.

Earlier in November, northern Utah and the southern Idaho region were hit by two 3.6-magnitude earthquakes. More than 100 people reportedly felt the first attack in Brigham City on November 12 from Salt Lake City to Logan. The second was near Bear Lake, Idaho just four days later on November 16th.

Nearly two years ago, Utah was hit by a 5.7-magnitude earthquake near Magna, and it was widely felt throughout north-central Utah.

According to the Utah Department of State History, the largest earthquake in Utah was a 6.6 on the Richter scale in March of 1934.
