KATHMANDU: The 25th National Earthquake Safety Day was symbolically observed at Bhogol Provincial Park as the nation mourns the loss of life in the Yeti Airlines crash in Pokhara on Sunday.

Earlier, the Kathmandu City Office had scheduled a special celebration for the day in Pujol Park today in the presence of Home Minister Rabih Lamichan. Bhugol Park houses the earthquake memorial.

According to Metropolis spokesperson Nabin Manandhar, the ceremony was merely symbolic. The government has declared a public holiday for the day to mourn the fatal aviation accident.

Representatives from the capital gathered to mark the day in a symbolic way.

Magh 2 is observed every year in the Nepali calendar as National Earthquake Safety Day in commemoration of the historic 1990 BS (1934) earthquake in Nepal.

Various programs from national to local level are scheduled today to celebrate the day.

According to Nepal’s National Society of Earthquake Technology (NSET) Executive Director Surya Narayan Shrestha, the Main Earthquake Ceremonies Committee event was also postponed at 11 o’clock due to the fatal plane crash on Sunday.

The government planned to celebrate the day with the theme “Earthquake Safe Infrastructure, Basis for Safe Living”.

Surendra Mohan Shrestha, Coordinator of the Main Celebration Publication Committee and Director General, Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, said the deferred programs will be organized within a week. This day has been celebrated since the year 2055 BS.
