Japan celebrates 12 years since the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident in 2011

Saturday marks the 12th anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan. The disaster caused one of the worst nuclear accidents in the world.

At 2:46 pm on March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast, sending waves up to 10 meters high into communities across the Tohoku region.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant suffered a triple meltdown, which released large amounts of radioactive material.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced from their homes.

National Police Agency statistics show that 15,900 people died due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, and 2,523 people are still missing.

The number of evacuees whose deaths were proven to be related to the disaster rose by six over the past year, to 3,792.

As of last month, there were still 30,884 evacuees.

Last year, Japanese nuclear regulators announced that treated and softened water from the crippled nuclear plant would be released into the ocean.

Water is pumped in to cool the molten fuel. It mixes with rain and groundwater that seeped into the damaged reactor buildings.

The Japanese government says most of the radioactive material was filtered from the water. The hydrogen isotope tritium remains but will be reduced to one-seventh of WHO drinking water standards.

Release is due this spring or summer. But the local fish industry opposes the plan. People in other countries have also expressed concern.

More than 300 square kilometers of land near the power plant is still classified as “difficult to return”.
