The seismologist says that Trinidad’s earthquakes are related to oil and gas production

Trinidad, Colorado (KRDO) – A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the border of Colorado and New Mexico early Sunday morning, according to the USGS.

The earthquake happened around 5 am, small shock waves were felt all the way to Monte Vista.

Scientists believe these earthquakes are related to oil and gas production, said Anne Sheehan, a seismologist and professor of geosciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

On March 9, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck Las Animas province. Sunday morning at about 5:00 am, just ten days later, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck.

David Cole, a resident of Trinidad, said he clearly felt the tremors.

“The fan in my room vibrated and I could hear the house cracking,” Cole said. “You could feel it from the south end of the house, go north and it was a very violent jolt.”

Cole said the earthquakes make him wonder what might happen next.

“Can they grow up? I don’t know. But that’s something I think should be shared.”

Sheehan said the root cause of the Trinidad earthquake was oil and gas production through sewage.

“Trinidad is on the eastern edge of the Raton Basin, which is a place with a lot of oil and gas production,” Sheehan said.

According to Sheehan, the process of pulling oil and gas out of the ground generates wastewater filled with pollutants.

“The way it’s usually disposed of is by reinjecting it into the ground,” Sheehan said.

However, the injection of wastewater causes movement underground, which leads to earthquakes.

“This can smooth out faults, and earthquakes related to sewage disposal are very common.”
