First testosterone patch for menopausal women to start clinical trials this year
The UK is set to launch the world’s first clinical trial of a new testosterone patch aimed at boosting libido in women with menopausal symptoms.
Testosterone is an essential hormone for women, and its production decreases significantly after menopause.
In some countries, testosterone creams and gels are available to help women who have lost their libido, but women must apply the correct amount to their skin and in some cases testosterone was originally designed for men. Products that have been applied to the skin may also transfer to other surfaces and materials, such as clothing.
Currently, there are no testosterone-delivery patches (applied to the skin to deliver hormones and only need to be replaced twice a week) approved for women suffering from adverse symptoms due to menopause.
Dr. Haitham Hammoda, Clinical Director of Menopause Services at King’s College Hospital and former Chairman of the British Hospital menopause Society said it welcomed the “significant” development because if the trials were successful, it would “offer more options for women.”
Medherant, founded by Professor David Huddleton of the University of Warwick, plans to begin a clinical trial in the fall to test the patch’s effects on libido.
If they do well and the treatment gets regulatory approval, this will be the only testosterone replacement patch available globally and the first to be introduced in the UK.
He added that the potential to improve women’s lives is “tremendous” and help with loss of libido.
“This is a very exciting development for us. The potential for this technology to improve the lives of women is enormous,” Huddleton said.

Guidelines issued by national laboratories since 2015 health and Care Excellence (Nice) recommend that menopausal women with low libido consider testosterone supplementation if HRT alone is ineffective.
The new patch aims to address a gap in menopausal products, offering a widely available, women-specific treatment.
