Earthquake survivors living on Turkish sleeping trains

The Al-Noor Mountains loom over the Alexandretta railway station, a grand reminder of the tectonic forces that devastated this corner of Turkey and Syria just over two months ago.

While a regular rail service still cycles through the station, two of the tracks are occupied by sleeping cars. The carriages hint at adventure and escape, but these night trains aren’t going anywhere. The passengers are homeless, having survived the February earthquake that left their homes or apartments damaged or destroyed.

About 700 people live in the cramped carriages. Among them is Sevil Uygur, who is in her 70s.

“We don’t have homes. They are gone. They are flattened to the ground,” Uighur told VOA. So we took refuge here with the children and we live here. They bring us food. People here never left hungry. But sleeping here is very problematic and difficult.

A young Uyghur granddaughter, Buren, is desperate to return to normal life. “I want to go to school, but it’s not possible at the moment. Of course I want to go to school,” said Borin.

Sevil Uygur says the lack of money made a bad situation worse. If we could go somewhere else, she could go to school. But we couldn’t stay here. Those who have money run away and go to other cities and their children go to school. “But we can’t do that, so we’re sitting here on the train,” she said.

27 train cars were designated for earthquake survivors when Voice of America visited the station on March 28. Twenty-two of them contained beds, which officials say were quickly taken by the first arrivals. The remaining five cars have no beds and people sleep on upright chairs.

Some of the residents of the trains, like Safia Kolaçi, have homes that are still standing but too dangerous to live in.

Our house was slightly damaged. If the authorities said we could live in our house, we would go today. We are waiting but we will stay here until they tell us it is safe to live there.”

Rail cars are much warmer and drier than a tent. But it’s cramped, crowded and noisy, with little privacy. With hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed or damaged by the earthquake, it is not clear when the homeless survivors will be able to move forward.
