India Today Health Desk: A new malaria vaccine has been developed and appears to be being called a ‘world changer’ by scientists. Called R21/Matrix-M, the malaria vaccine surpasses the World Health Organization target of 75% efficacy for the first time.
WHO is considering approval of a vaccine, but Ghana is the first country to approve a new malaria vaccine.
The vaccine was developed at the University of Oxford and is approved by the Ghana Food and Drug Administration for children aged 5-36 months, the group most at risk of dying from malaria.
“It is hoped that this first important step will allow vaccines to help children in Ghana and Africa effectively fight malaria,” the university said in a statement.
Professor Adrian Hill, Principal Investigator of the R21/Matrix-M Vaccine Program and Director of the University’s Jenner Institute, said: “This is the culmination of 30 years of malaria vaccine research at the University of Oxford. The high vaccine design and availability will allow us to supply it on a sufficient scale to the countries that need it most.”
Researchers publish findings from phase IIb trial of vaccine in journal SSRN/The Lancet preprintdemonstrating a high level of efficacy of 77% at 12 months follow-up.

The researchers found no serious vaccine-related adverse events and reported vaccine efficacy of 77% in the high-dose adjuvant group and 71% in the low-dose adjuvant group at 12 months follow-up. I’m here.
More than 100 malaria vaccine candidates have entered clinical trials over the past decades, but none have shown efficacy exceeding the 75% target of the WHO’s Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap.
India’s Serum Institute, the biotech giant that makes the R21 vaccine, said it could produce more than 200 million doses a year.
As quoted by The Guardian, Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla said the approval of the vaccine by the Ghanaian authorities was an important milestone in the fight against malaria.
